Abstract

Efficient operation of axial pumping stations requires coordinated management of hydraulic conditions, pump-unit combinations, water delivery, and energy consumption. This study develops a mathematical modeling and control approach for optimizing the operating modes of axial pumping stations in irrigation systems. Hydraulic parameters, pump characteristics, operational constraints, and energy requirements are integrated into an optimization framework to determine advantageous flow distributions among multiple pumping units. Analytical optimization, including the Lagrange approach, is combined with computational analysis using operational data from the irrigation system. The results identify feasible operating modes under different hydraulic conditions and demonstrate the importance of coordinated pump operation for controlling water flow and energy use. The proposed approach provides an engineering framework for improving pumping-station operation while maintaining required hydraulic conditions. The findings are relevant to sustainable water and energy management and support resource-efficient operation of irrigation infrastructure.
